Rescue of a failing project
A large global commercial logistics provider was engaged in a major business implementation program with one of their key customers. Part of this business change program was the implementation of a new software system to replace an aging mainframe system that supported a very paper-centric business process.
Client challenge
The project to replace the software had been underway for some time and had started with an inexperienced project manager who also did not have enough time to dedicate to the project. Consequently, the project had been initiated poorly — requirements had not been gathered, documented, formally agreed upon or understood sufficiently to ensure the success of the project.
As the target implementation date approached, it became obvious that the project would fail. But success was imperative because this project was to be the first major deliverable of the entire program.
Attevo was asked to help address the issues with the project and assist the internal project manager to successfully deliver the project.

Attevo re-assessed the overall project objectives to ensure they were still valid and complete. The project was then re-planned, working closely with the project sponsor, stakeholders and the internal project manager, to revise the project scope according to available timescales and resources.
The project was separated into two phases: one to implement the immediate needs of the end-customer and the second to deliver the rest of the functionality. This approach was crucial to bringing the project back on target and focusing the project team on the most beneficial deliverables.
Project disciplines were introduced such as regular project meetings and greater attention to risks. Swift action was taken to remedy issues ensuring a continued and consistent focus was maintained on delivering the project.
The second phase required additional resources and an extended range of skills. Attevo worked closely with the logistics company to establish a team of resources capable of delivering the phase two solution and working closely with the end-customer to ensure their satisfaction. Attevo played a pivotal role in mobilizing the resources within both the logistics company and the end-customer, ultimately working on site with the end-customer, to ensure everything was delivered successfully.
Results
The logistics company's project was delivered successfully with key deliverables provided as early as possible, providing the end-customer with fast business benefit.
The project team was able to deliver all of the requirements within the target timetable and the project manager gained a considerable level of confidence and knowledge, allowing him to go on to repeat the successful project cycle again for other projects within the program.
